Awards for Best Student and Best Institution Practices / Programs
Awards
- Award A-1: Best Practice/Program Award - Institution - This award is designated to a Member Institution for Best Practices or a Program implemented within the past year (2008-2009). SWCHA will award $500 to one institution toward their continued efforts in the practice or program. The Institution will report back to the SWCHA membership on the advancements of the practice or program at the 2010 annual meeting.
- Award A-2: Best Practice/Program Award - Student Group - This award is designated to a Student Member, or group of Students, for a program concept to be implemented in the forthcoming year (2009-2010). SWCHA will award $500 to the student group, to be used toward implementation of the project. The project results will be reported to the SWCHA membership at the 2010 annual meeting. Academic Health Plans is sponsoring this years Student Group Award. Thank you!
Program Eligibility for Nomination
- Programs and services may be self-nominated or peer-nominated.
- All nominated programs must be consistent with the mission and vision of SWCHA.
- Programs should emphasize diversity and wellness whenever practical.
- Nominated programs must be implemented at an institution in the five states constituting the Southwest College Health Association.
Expectations for Award Recipients
During the recipient year the winner will
- Present the program and/or results in a manner accessible to SWCHA members, either via presentation (poster or personal), and/or various forms of technology (email, web page or other media).
- Provide to SWCHA Executive Board an accounting of use of dollars awarded
The awards will be given each year in one or more of the following categories: Awards Committee Discretion: recognizing that some valuable programs defy simple categorization, the awards committee may approve programs for consideration that are not specifically defined in the listed categories. Be creative and submit your program or best practice.
Things to Consider (all areas do not need to be addressed)
- Does the program promote healthy lifestyles that will have a positive impact on the decision-making development of students?
- Does the program involve collaborative efforts within the university, student affairs and academic affairs, to help promote retention, good health, and improve student's academic performance?
- Does the program involve diverse populations within the college or university?
- Does the program encourage or facilitate the improvement of college health practices?
- Does the program have identifiable and measurable outcomes?
- Is the program student focused?
- Does the practice or program result in fiscal conservation?
- Does the practice or program have measurable outcomes?
- Can this practice or program be replicated at other institutions regardless of size?
- Clinical Services may include

and/or programs the awards committee approve for consideration of this award.
- Administrative and Consumer Services may include
patient satisfaction

- Counseling Services may include
psychiatry

workshops and presentations

and/or programs the awards committee approve for consideration of this award.
Nominations will follow SWCHA guidelines including
- To nominate a colleague for an award, nomination packages must include a letter (or e-mail) of nomination, along with a minimum of two and maximum of five letters of support. At least one letter of support must be from a current SWCHA member. The nomination package may be sent via email attachments or hard copy U.S. Postal Service as noted below. Deadline for submission is October 15, 2009.
- The nominator of a candidate is responsible for sending the letter of nomination, gathering the required letters of support, and sending the entire nominations package to the SWCHA contact by the deadline.
The letter of nomination and letters of support should
- Specify the award for which the candidate(s) is being nominated
- Include as much background information about the candidate(s) as possible
- Describe the best practice or program with as much detail as possible
- Describe what award money will be used for, if known at this time.
- Explain in detail why the candidate(s) deserves the award
The Awards Committee shall consider all complete nominations and review against the established award purpose and criteria. At the time of selection by the Awards Committee, candidates must be students, or employees, of a member institution in good standing.
